This course aims to help students with little or no prior Mandarin Chinese acquire basic Chinese knowledge and develop basic speaking, reading and writing skills.
At the end of the course, students are expected to
① Mastering the pronunciation system and basic grammar,
② Be able to have daily conversations in basic Chinese,
③ Be able to read and write short sentences.
Through language learning, students will gain an initial understanding of some Chinese social and cultural phenomena.

１．PinYin1 (Chinese Pronunciation), Writing & Useful Expressions
２．PinYin2 (Chinese Pronunciation), Online Resources
３．Lesson1: Greetings (Exchanging Greetings, Asking about someone’s nationality)
４．Lesson2: Family(Looking at a Family photo, Asking about Someone’s Family)
5． Total review of PinYin, Lesson 1-2, written and oral exam for PinYin.
６．Lesson3: Dates& Time (Taking someone out to eat on his/her birthday, Inviting someone to dinner)
７． Lesson 4: Hobbies (Talking about hobbies, Would you like to play ball?)
８．Lesson5: Visiting friends (Visiting a friend’s home, At a friend’s house)
９． Total review of Lesson 1-5 and listening, conversation, Q&A practice, Mid-term Written and Oral Exam.
１０．Lesson6: Making appointments (Calling one’s teacher, Calling a friend for help)
１１．Lesson7: Studying Chinese (How did you do on the exam? Preparing for a Chinese Class)
１２．Lesson8: School life (A typical school day, Talking about studying Chinese)
１３．Lesson9: Shopping (Shopping for Clothes, Exchanging shoes)
１４．Lesson10: Transportation (Going home for the winter vacation, Thank you someone for a ride by email)
１５．Total review of Lesson1-10 and listening, conversation, Q&A practice
１６. Final Written and Oral Exam.

Grading:
1.    Attendance & Performance: 15%
2.    Small test& homework:15%
3.    Mid-term exam:30%
4.    Final exam: 40%

Final written test: Model answers provided in Unipa

・You are required to attend all classes.
・You must attend more than 3/4 of the total number of classes (this includes final exams, etc.) even if you must be absent due to unavoidable reasons. You will automatically receive an “F” if you are absent for more than one quarter (25%) of the classes.
※Legally designated infectious disease and Absence approved by UoH are not regarded as absences.

・ The maximum number of students will be 25,  If the number of applicants exceeds the maximum number of students, students will be selected by random drawing.
