This research seminar will review the performance of family firms in Japan. Then, it will shed light on crowdfunding, venture capitalists, business angels, credit guarantee schemes, and initial coin offerings to finance young entrepreneurs and start-ups. In this seminar, the students will learn concepts, theories, and operational aspects of each tool for financing start-ups mentioned above. At the end, the seminar will discuss the role of Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing economies. After completing the seminar, students will learn about the latest financial tools for providing funding support to young entrepreneurs and start-ups. 事前・事後学習(予習・復習)の内容・時間の目安
This seminar targets students who want to learn innovative financial tools to finance young entrepreneurs and start-ups. In this seminar, students will read academic papers and articles on the latest financial tools compared to banks. This requires substantial time to study at home after each session. Also, students need to present selected papers in a team. I suggest students read at least two hours before and after each session. In total, the students need to spend 60 hours of study outside the class.
アクティブ・ラーニングの内容
Active learning tools include lectures, academic readings, cases, and assignments. If the Covid-19 pandemic appears again, the course will be offered online using Zoom. The instructor will provide the necessary materials in the classroom. PowerPoint slides will be given to the students before delivering each lecture so that they can make the necessary preparations for the upcoming class. Students need to study outside the class for about two hours for each lecture to participate actively in the classroom discussion. Finally, students need to attend classes regularly and produce a final report at the end of the seminar.
