講義目的・到達目標
This course is focused on developing intercultural communication skills, the main goal being to enhance the understanding of both one’s culture, and other cultures of the world. The students will acquire the necessary skills for life in a global society, where understanding ways of life completely different from one’s own has become a daily necessity.

講義内容・授業計画
A. Class content
During each class, various topics pertaining to the concept of “culture” as a human universal will be introduced, then discussed with the students. Students are encouraged to read the indicated materials in advance, so that they can actively take part in the discussion and small workshops.

2. Introduction to comparative culture. Culture, anthropology, ethnology.
3. Cultural practices (manners and gestures)
4. Ethnocentrism, racism, and cultural relativism
5. Cultural stereotypes

The necessary materials will be distributed by the instructor.

Relevant references will be indicated at the end of each class (in preparation for the next).
事前・事後学習(予習・復習)の内容・時間の目安
Students are expected to spend about 60 minutes in preparation for each class (reviewing the content of the previous class and reading the indicated materials).
アクティブ・ラーニングの内容
The course will have guests who come from different professional fields and different cultures, to encourage a hands-on approach to intercultural communication.
成績評価の基準・方法
Grading criteria

S 90%~) excellent (thorough mastery of course material & concepts)
A (80%~) good (proficient grasp of most course material & concepts)
B (70%~) fair (general understanding of principal course material & concepts) 
C (60%~) poor but passing (superficial familiarity with some course material)
In order to obtain the credits for this course, at least a C (60%) is necessary.

Evaluation methods

active contribution to class activities 40% (discussions, presentations), final exam 60%

課題・試験結果の開示方法
Feedback will be provided during class discussions and after the midterm presentations.
履修上の注意・履修要件
The purpose of this class is to provide students with a practical understanding of intercultural communication, and as such class participation and discussion are very important.
実践的教育
Based on the instructor's 15 year experience doing fieldwork, one short research trip may be scheduled as part of the class.
