【講義目的】
Students will aim to examine social and cultural issues through comparative studies across different cultures and countries. We will especially compare Japan and Western countries. 【到達目標】 Upon completing the course, students will a) Deepen their understanding of social and cultural issues by comparing Japan with international contexts b) Acquire the ability to consider social, cultural, and moral issues from multiple perspectives c) Develop critical thinking skills and apply them to cross cultural contexts 授業のサブタイトル・キーワード

講義内容・授業計画
【講義内容】
This course is based on active learning, which allows students to develop a deeper understanding of cross-cultural studies. Following a lecture on one of the topics listed below, students are expected to participate in a short discussion. 【授業計画】 (CHU - Materials provided in class) 1) Developing cross-cultural thinking, Culture 2) Society 3) Identity and social groups 4) Gender and society 5) Sexuality 6) Class, stratification and inequality 7) Race and ethnicity 8) Mid-term Exam (BIRD - Materials provided in class) 9) Hobbes's Leviathan and maintaining social order. 10) The social contract and government. 11) Sin and public morality. 12) The cultural unconscious. 13) Globalization and the "village". 14) Morality and right from wrong. 15) Self-improvement and authenticity. *May change depending on class size and students' needs. 教科書

Credits will be awarded based on the achievement and effort in relation to the lecture objectives and achievement goals. The grading is as follows: S (90 points or higher) A (80 points or higher) B (70 points or higher) C (60 points or higher) 【成績評価の方法】 *For CHU 7x Participation - 10% 7x Discussion - 30% 7x Homework/Assignment - 20% 1x Mid-term Test - 40% *For BIRD 1x Individual presentation (30%) 1x Written report accompanying presentation (30%) 1x End of term examination (40%) CHU's and BIRD's scores will be combined and announced on Universal Passport 課題・試験結果の開示方法

Students are expected to create their own work and not rely on generative AI for reports, essays, dissertations, and other academic assignments.
However, with the instructor's approval, students may use AI to assist them within the limits of the instructor's guidelines. Use of AI should be disclosed to the instructor. It is crucial to exercise caution regarding the authenticity of the content generated by AI. Using such content may lead to unintentional plagiarism or copyright infringement.
