Course Objectives and Learning Outcome

【講義目的】

This course is aimed at providing the students with Japanese language skills necessary for effective communication in everyday life and in the academic environment. The course will focus on developing the ability to process information and coherently express one’s ideas in Japanese, up to the intermediate level.

By the end of the course, the students will have acquired the ability to make use of the information they receive in order to express their ideas in Japanese in a logical, coherent manner.

【講義内容】
Each class will introduce fundamental conversational patterns used for effective communication in Japanese. The students will engage in individual and group practice to develop their communication skills, starting from a variety of written, audio, and video material from the textbook and other sources.

Contents and Estimated Time for Pre- and Post- Learning (Preparation and Review)

【予習】 Students are expected to use at least 60 minutes in preparation for each class, completing the indicated assignments and reviewing the content of the previous class.

【復習】 Students are expected to prepare for the midterm and the final exam by reviewing the content of each class.
Contents of Active Learning
As part of the class activities, the students will engage in group work meant to facilitate the comprehension of the provided material. They will also engage in conversation practice, thus actively using the information introduced in each class. 
Grading Criteria and Methods

【成績評価の基準】

Grading criteria:

S (90%~) excellent (thorough mastery of course material & concepts)

A (80%~) good (proficient grasp of most course material & concepts)

B (70%~) fair (general understanding of principal course material & concepts)

C (60%~) poor but passing (superficial familiarity with some course

material)

To obtain the credits for this course, at least a C (60%) is necessary.

Active contribution to class activities 50%, final evaluation 50%

Feedback and explanations for the tasks and assignments will be given in class.
Precautions and Requirements for Course Registration

Students are expected to actively participate in class activities and to prepare in advance by completing the indicated assignments and reviewing the content of the previous class.

This class is part of integrated learning with the course named “Practical Japanese”. Students are strongly recommended to register for both classes.

You may try one class above your level, but you may not register for a lower-level class.
