森林生態系の機能と構造についての理解を深め、人間活動に伴う環境改変がこれらに及ぼす影響を考察することを目的とする。森林生態系がもたらす公益的機能の評価と人間と自然が共存した持続型社会を構築するための課題や社会的取り組みについて議論できるスキルを身につけることを目標とする。

関連文献や書籍を通して知識の習得に努める。さらに得られた知識を統合し、自分の見解を加え、それを他者に伝える能力を主にプレゼンテーションによって養う。プレゼンテーション後は質疑応答や意見交換を行い、議論への参加の仕方や議論の進め方を勉強する。
