Course Objectives and Learning Outcome
Global environment changes have a great impact on life on the Earth. The purpose of this lecture is for students to explain the basic knowledge of the Earth and planetary science; the students find relationships among various phenomena on the Earth, and discuss/summarize the past, present and future of the earth's environment.
Goals: 1) Analysis and discovery of relationship among various phenomena such as the history of the universe and the Earth, the internal structure of the Earth, plate tectonics and plume tectonics, the formation of the Japanese islands, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. 2) Understanding the overall view of the Earth based on the basics and the recent research topics of geophysics and geology. Subtitle and Keywords of the Class
Earth, Geology, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Global warming, Energy resources
Course Overview and Schedule
In order to understand the evolution of the earth and planets and the process of formation of the earth's environment, students will learn the basics of the Earth and planetary science, and acquire ways of considerations about the Earth’s phenomena on various spatial-temporal scales. Furthermore, students will discuss the latest research findings on natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, global warming issues, and energy issues, and the related scientific challenges. Each lecture is as follows.
1: Japan as "Earthquake Island" 2: Characteristics of earthquakes and active faults 3: Internal structure of planets 4: Solar system and the Earth. 5: Plate tectonics: how was the hypothesis proven? 6: Evolution of island arc and the Earth's magnetic field 7: Technology in Earth observation I: Groundwater and environment 8: Technology in Earth observation II: Active volcanoes and geology 9: Plume tectonics and the Earth 10: Earth planetary science and society I: People, culture, and natural environment 11: Earth planetary science and society II: Energy resources and the future 12: Earth planetary science and society III: Disaster risks in our local areas 13: Disaster mitigation/prediction and numerical simulation 14: Global warming issue and the future 15: Summary and evaluation (confirmation of achievement) Plus, the final exams. Contents and Estimated Time for Pre- and Post- Learning (Preparation and Review)
[Preparation] Reading class text in advance (10h), and organizing basic knowledge for quiz (5h).
[Review] Writing a report (5 times, 20h), and re-reading textbooks and on-demand teaching materials to deepen the understanding of the lecture content (25h). Contents of Active Learning
Discussions with guest lecturers are planned (twice).
Grading Criteria and Methods
For students who understand the basics of the Earth and planetary science and can discuss its application and solutions to various problems associated with global environmental changes, the evaluation will be done based on their abilities described in the lecture objectives and goals.
40% with reports and quizzes, and 60% with the final exams, including their attendance attitude (proactive questions, etc.). How to Disclose Assignments and Exam Results
Students may have to re-submit their reports with corrections based on the teacher's request, if the reports fall below a certain level of completion. Comment on the excellent reports will be opened to students. Typical answers will be also opened after the exams.
