講義目的・到達目標
This course is a cultural studies class that is heavily rooted in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Japanese and global contemporary social issues. Students will gain critical reading and speaking skills in both Japanese and English, and will learn to think about how to critically engage with cultural issues and the SDGs that interest them from multiple perspectives. They will learn to use both of their languages as tools to further action to achieve the SDGs in Japan and the world. Students will be able to share their research, opinions, and ideas about the content in class discussion and presentation.

We will discuss the principles of effective presentation and put these principles into action with actual presentation practice by discussing and debating topics related to the SDGs. 



Presentation skills and techniques to be covered include:

Engaging with your audience

Managing a Q & A session

The course ends with a final presentation in which you will have the opportunity to present on your own research topic.

Materials will be provided by the instructor.

At least two hours of review and prep will be required outside of class each week.

  • Each week we have assignments from the textbook. In addition, students are expected to do research in order to contribute to in-class discussion
  • Read through the assigned pages at least once, marking words you do not recognize. Use the glossary and dictionaries to write in meaning you do not know.                              
  • Students should be prepared to engage with a variety of media in their assignments and to complete bilingual work.
  • Weekly research responses in English are due in class.

The class will discuss human rights issues from multiple perspectives.

Feedback will be provided in class and via Unipa. 
履修上の注意・履修要件

This class is a required course for the Global Leader Education Program (GLEP). Non-GLEP students who would like to take this course need to submit the application form in the application period. The number of the students who can take this course is 15 per section, and depending on the number of GLEP students and non-GLEP applicants, the non-GLEP students will be selected according to their proficiency level. Details concerning the application and selection procedures for non-GLEP students will be posted on Universal Passport in July or August.
