Learning Objectives: Cultural anthropology examines how people live and interact across different societies.
Learning Targets: In this course, students explore various cultures and reflect on their own by comparing them with others.

Course Overview and Schedule
I. Course Content

Students will critically reflect on the concept of culture and learn how notions of language, communication, gender, marriage, and kinship vary across cultures.
Furthermore, this course introduces the key research methods of anthropology and offers students an opportunity to read an example of an ethnography and present it in small groups.

Precautions for using Generative AI
In this course, the use of generative AI is strictly prohibited. Any use during class is forbidden, and if a violation is discovered, credits may not be granted or may be revoked.
Regardless of whether generative AI is used or not, students must pay attention to the contents described in “Guidelines on the Use of Generative AI in Education at the University of Hyogo (For Students)”

Contents and Estimated Time for Pre- and Post- Learning (Preparation and Review)
[Preparation] Students are required to complete the assigned readings prior to class and prepare a group presentation (15 hours).
[Review] Students are expected to review the assigned readings to deepen their knowledge (15 hours).
Contents of Active Learning
Students will be provided with an opportunity to read an example of an ethnography in small groups and present this ethnography through group presentations.
Grading Criteria and Methods
[Grading Criteria]
Students who demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture, read an example of an ethnography and contribute to a group presentation will be graded following the objectives and goals (knowledge and skills, thinking ability, judgment) stated on the syllabus: S (90 points or more), A (80 points or more), B (70 points or more), C (60 points or more). Students who score at least 60 points will receive credit for this course.

[Grading Method]
Grades are based on: 30% quizzes (two quizzes will be conducted), 25% group presentation, 30% final exam, and 15% active contribution to class activities .


How to Disclose Assignments and Exam Results
The instructor will return the written quizzes with detailed comments.
Before the final examination, the instructor will review the entire course content and conduct a feedback session to hear the students' opinions about the course.
Precautions and Requirements for Course Registration
Students are required to complete the assignments and participate in group presentations.
Students are required to attend class on a weekly basis.
Practical Education
Students will have an opportunity to conduct fieldwork in small groups.
Remarks
In past semesters, some students left after attendance was recorded.
Students are required to stay in the classroom for the entire class period.
Attendance will be taken at the end of each class.


In cases where any differences arise between the English version and the original Japanese version, the Japanese version shall prevail as the official authoritative version.
